 University High School Reunion Committee

May 17, 2011

Dear Alumni and Friends,

University High School may have closed 46 years ago, but its graduates show no sign of dimming loyalty. Plans for our eighth all-class reunion in 2011 are buoyed by a successful reunion in 2008 and the success of the Dr. J. Mctyeire Daniel and C.B. Harvey scholarship fund for the School of Education at USC. This fund has helped more than 35 University of South Carolina students for teaching careers.

The scholarship link with Carolina is an outgrowth of the origins of University High School, established in 1932 by the USC School (now College) of Education and Columbia City Schools as the first “practice-teaching school” in the city. The school closed in 1966 when the University needed room to expand. During its existence dozens of students from Carolina received their teaching experience in the small school where the average graduating class numbered around 50. The scholarship was established by Principal Harvey to honor Dr. J. Mctyeire Daniel, a professor in the College of Education who was in charge of the practice teaching program. Since its inception in 1966—the year University High School closed—grants have been made annually to a student or students preparing for teaching on the high school level. Mr. Harvey was the principal fund-raiser, sending out dozens of letters, exhorting former teachers and students to contribute.

Several years before he died, Mr. Harvey wrote that the fund then had approximately $26,000 in it. “This is great, but we can do better!” he said. The fund now has over $78,600 and members of the committee are hoping it will increase markedly in the future. The College of Education has received a donation of $20,000, which is a challenge gift to all of the University High school alumni and friends. Please consider making your gift today. More than 275 individuals, including former students and their guests, attended Reunion VII in May 2008. As your chairman, along with Vice President Nancy Barre, the Reunion Committee felt the event was successful on all accounts and broke even financially. In addition to the great time we had renewing acquaintances with many old friends, the scholarship established by Mr. Harvey received additional gifts, raising the principal to more than $78,600.

At a post-reunion meeting of the planning committee, we reviewed every aspect of Reunion VII, and the committee believes it has a plan in place for an even better reunion in 2011. Please stay in touch by visiting our website.
I look forward to seeing you all at the reunion July 16, 2011, at Seawell's.  And, again, we encourage you to meet the challenge and give to the J. Mctyeire Daniel/C.B. Harvey Scholarship Fund.

                                            Sincerely,

                                            Jack Haynes, ’63

Committee Chairman
